The internet has changed the mode of communication. Practically everything from paying bills to communicating with loved ones is done on the web today. So it is no surprise that with the growth and popularity of the web comes a growth of invaders. There have been decades of issues that involve virus dating back before the Love Bug which was a virus that swarmed around the internet and crashed many computers. So how do prevent security breaches and viruses? First you must know what to look for. Here are a few tips to help against spam.

  • Be aware of the email monster: The best place to find spam is in your email inbox if you don’t have your spam filter on. chain emails can cary viruses, other email messages can lead to fraud. Some people pretend to be the government, or charities asking for donations and either way you will be ripped off.
  • Downloads can lead to disaster: Downloaded content, be it music or data files, can hold any type of virus that can change settings or completely destroy your computer.
  • Web pages: Some web pages can hold instantly downloading viruses as soon as you open them, so its a good idea to be cautious about what sites you are searching for.
  • Social Media Sites: There are even viruses inside social media sites, sometimes these won’t actually damage your computer but they can damage your reputation by sending out false emails that are offensive or racist to your entire contact list.

The Role Of The Spam Filter In Email

The spam folder is the infamous by product of email. Ever since advertisers have learned that email is a way to talk to the customers, they have been finding ways to collect these valuable addresses. Once marketing got a hold of the idea to use email as a marketing tool, it went overboard. As result, spam was created. In order to combat, the growing epidemic and frustration by email users, the mail service providers created filters to stop a lot of the incoming spam.

These filters were obviously labeled as the spam folder. However, they are not a foolproof way to stop the spam. They are only partially successful at the task of filtering spam. Some of it still gets through but the situation is much better now. Coupled with many anti-spam laws, spam has been greatly reduced as a result.

However, the spam folder has its limitations. The spam folder is not always successful at filtering out spam. Some of it somehow always manages to sneak through. Most of the spam that filters through can be attributed to typing in an email address into a meaningless piece of advertisement. Once this happens, the advertisement will walk through the open door that was provided. The spam folder is not designed to stop direct mailing applications. In addition, the spam folder may mistaken important emails for spam.

The spam folder has become a permanent part of our email format. As long as people are trying to sell stuff, there will be spam. There has been some progress in bringing it under control with laws and filtering. Unfortunately, spam will probably be stuck with us for a long while. You can’t stop it but you can stop feeding into the system by only giving your email address out to those who really need it.

Email can also increase the speed at which your employees perform their tasks. There is less of a need to spend endless time on the phone when the same things can be explained in an email, in less time.

The proper use of corporate email accounts will improve productivity and increase communication. The cost savings alone should be an incentive to increase their usage. These are just a few ways that will help your company and there are several other benefits to it.

Controlling Span on Your Own

Controlling the amount of spam that is delivered to your email account can become a tedious and time consuming project. There are several things you can do in order to minimize the amount of junk emails that are delivered. Being able to control these emails will reduce the risk of opening unwanted emails and will help you maintain a secure email account. Even though this process can take sometime, you will have more time to be productive and less frustrated with your personal or business email accounts. Here are a few ways you can maintain a good and secure email account.

* If you have noticed the pattern of your spam mail, most of them come from the same address on a daily basis. The best way to control them would be to block them or mark them as spam. Once reported, they will not be delivered to your inbox and instead they will end up in your junk mail folder and will be deleted automatically.
* Some emails can be blocked by the words they use or the subject of the email. The only problem with using specific wording is that, you stand to send some of your legitimate emails into the same junk mail folder. Instead try to block by the subject of the email. Most of them will be in regards to free or low cost services and contain adult service information. Once you set the rules to block these emails, you will receive a lot less of them.
* If for any reason you are unable to perform either of the above tasks, then there are several low cost services you can sign up for. These services will enable spam filters on your email account and each email coming into your mail box will be scanned before delivery. You always have the option of reviewing what is blocked, in case there are emails you need delivered, instead of being blocked.
